Recreation day or entertainment? Tax treatment of the costs

A recreation day organised for staff and an event organised for customers are treated differently in taxation. The same outing can be partly recreation and partly entertainment if customers are present – in that case record the costs separately.

Frequently asked questions: Activity Radar

What can you do free of charge?

National parks, recreation areas and nature trails are free, as are, for example, the Helsinki City Museum, Werstas Workers' Museum in Tampere, Vantaa Historical Museum and Artsi art museum, and the Kotilo Children's Culture Centre in Oulu. In many art museums, under-18s get in free.

Is the Museum Card worth it?

The Museum Card costs 86 € and gives access to over 360 museums for 12 months. If an adult ticket costs 12–20 €, the card pays for itself in about 5–8 visits. Validity starts only from the first museum visit.

What to do with children on a rainy day?

Good indoor destinations include science centres (Heureka, Arktikum, Tietomaa), indoor playgrounds (Leo's, SuperPark), trampoline parks and spas. Many museums, such as Vapriikki, the Moomin Museum and the Kuopio Museum, also offer activities of their own for children.

What suits a company recreation day?

Popular choices include escape rooms, laser games (e.g. Megazone, ZBase), bowling (e.g. BowlCircus Flamingo), karting and guided nature trips and saunas. Many venues have separate group and corporate packages and meeting rooms.

How much does a regular museum ticket cost?

In the museums in the dataset, an adult ticket is usually about 10–22 €. For example, Vapriikki costs 16 €, Turku Castle 18 €, the Moomin Museum 18 € and Arktikum 22 €.

What is Finland's most popular national park?

In 2025 the most visits were to Pallas-Yllästunturi (586,800) and Urho Kekkonen National Park (424,900). The most popular in southern Finland was Nuuksio (298,700 visits).

When are the school holidays?

The autumn holiday is 12.–16.10.2026 in most large cities and 19.–23.10.2026 in Oulu, Lahti and Pori. The 2027 winter holiday is staggered: the capital region, Turku and Pori 22.–26.2., Tampere, Jyväskylä and Lahti 1.–5.3., Oulu, Kuopio, Joensuu and Rovaniemi 8.–12.3.

Is a company recreation day tax-free for an employee?

Yes, when the recreation event is customary, reasonable in cost and organised for the whole staff (Finnish Tax Administration). No euro limit has been set. If the trip is offered to only part of the staff, the benefit may be taxable pay.

Can a business deduct the costs and VAT of a recreation day?

Yes. The costs of a customary recreational event arranged for the whole staff are deductible in income taxation, and the VAT on them is also deductible (Veronmaksajat 2024). An event arranged for customers is entertainment: 50% of it is deductible and VAT may not be deducted.

Can the sports and culture benefit be used for a museum or Museum Card?

Yes. The sports and culture benefit can be used for cultural services such as museums, and the Museum Card can be paid for in the Museum Card online shop with Edenred, Epassi and Zevoy. The tax-exempt maximum of the benefit rises to 540 euros for 2026 (Parliament approved this in September 2026); the employer decides whether to raise the benefit.

How much is the VAT on admission tickets?

The value added tax on admission tickets to museums, zoos, films, concerts and sports services is 13,5 % from 1.1.2026; previously it was 14 % (Finnish Tax Administration). The ticket price includes the tax, so the change is visible to the consumer only if the venue has lowered its price.

Tips

How to use the information

  1. Get a Museum Card if you visit museums about 5–8 times a year or more: the card costs 86 € and its 12-month validity only starts from the first visit.
  2. Many museums are always free, for example Helsinki City Museum, the Werstas Workers' Museum in Tampere, the Vantaa History Museum and Artsi Art Museum. Under-18s get into many art museums for free.
  3. National parks, city recreation areas and nature trails are free and open all year round. Check routes and fire pits on Luontoon.fi and bring your own packed lunch.
  4. Book indoor activities (laser tag, escape rooms, trampoline parks, bowling) in advance, especially during school autumn and winter breaks – in many places groups and private events can only be booked in advance.
  5. Escape rooms, laser games and bowling alleys with group prices and meeting or restaurant facilities suit a company recreation day. Ask for the package price directly from the venue, as group prices are not always shown online.
  6. Check whether you have an unused exercise and culture benefit. The Museum Card can be paid for in the Museum Card online shop with Edenred, Epassi and Zevoy, and many museums and attractions accept the benefit at the ticket desk.
  7. Organise a recreation day for the whole staff: when the event is ordinary and reasonable, it is tax-free for employees and deductible for the company, including for VAT purposes. A trip offered only to part of the staff is taxable pay.
  8. Book staff recreation and client entertainment to separate accounts. Only 50% of entertainment expenses are deductible and their VAT cannot be deducted, so a mixed-use event should be split into portions.
  9. In 2025 a hotel room cost 127 € on average, and the hotel occupancy rate was 55 %. During holiday weeks and large events it is worth booking accommodation early.
